The company Online Patent registered the name of the main building and official residence of the innovations center Skolkovo MATREX as a trademark . MATREX is one of the most noticeable and recognizable buildings of Skolkovo. The name MATREX was formed by means of merging the words Matrioshka (Russian nesting doll), Matrix and Rex (lat. Rex – royal). The building was designed by the architect bureau BERNASKONI.

Registration of trademarks for buildings, monuments and sculptures is a rare occurrence. The device marks in general are not often found, but cases when they represent the exterior of a building are extremely rare. For instance, the trademarks of the Central Children’s Store in Lubyanka, the Bolshoy Theatre and Babaev Confectionary Factory are registered trademarks. Except for those examples, I haven’t encountered such type of device filed for registration as a trademark. Three applications in total were filed through Online Patent: for registration of the word mark “МАТРЕКС MATREX”, for registration of the design mark depicting the building itself and for registration of the combined trademark. Russian Federal Agency for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks passed favorable decisions on all three applications”.
